Here’s the email from the teachers regarding the Wildlife Victoria assigment.

I was so close. I can’t believe how close I was. I’m sad/happy/irritated. I really thought I had a chance (and yes, as you can see, I did), but I was aiming higher. I really wanted that iPad. The positive thing is that I’ll get a good grade, and that’s good, but I was hoping for a little bit more. Okay, I should be happy. I am:) Being number 7 of 70-80 students is not bad.
It’ll be fun to see the winning assignment though. Megan won and I have no idea how her logo turned out.
Soooo this new assignment… bah! I’m on thin ice. I chose Baraka as my movie. That was sort of the one that inspired me the most and the one I felt I could do whatever with. BUT it’s so hard. There’s no way I can film, so I have to illustrate and I’m not an illustrator. For you who haven’t seen Baraka already, it’s a movie without cast. There’s only music and images from all over the world put together. It’s an experimental documentary, filmed in 24 countries on 150 different locations. I found it interesting the first time I watched it, but the second it started to get really boring:P But absolutely a beautiful movie I would recommend.
Anyways, my story board isn’t where it should be at this point. I only have a rough plan in my head and for tomorrow it has to be on paper. I want a leaf to blow off a tree and kinda move with the wind all over “the world”. I sorta want it to symbolize that the world’s not that big. The main problem will be to get the leaf to blow realistically in the wind. I’ve already made the first frame with the tree. Then the one with the pyramids is still a sketch, while the last one is almost done, just needs a little more details. I’m quite happy with my last illustration actually, but I’m not sure if you can see that it’s the slum in Rio De Janeiro?

Illustrating the locations takes forever, while animating them is going to take a lifetime. I have no idea if I’ll manage to get everything done in time. The assignment is due in two weeks. Kill me now!
Photographing glass is challenging, but really fun. Last week the teacher had a lecture on some tips and tricks to make cheap glass look exclusive. And some other tips on how to make the highlight from the light look good and not to harsh. On Tuesday we got to experiment with what he showed us. I work with Kristian and Emma for all the assignments. We started by setting up the studio, the glass looked okay, not super, but when we snapped the shot we all went “WOW!”. The photos turned out amazing. Here’s two examples.

Cheap Ikea glasses. Don’t they look just exquisite?
This is one way we put up our studio. Though this gave a whole different expression to the photo than the two above. You can see that we never put a light directly on the glass, we always use tracing paper in the middle or point the light somewhere else. The tracing paper helps us controlling the light so we can decide how the highlights turn out.

Today was really hectic. We handed in the Wildlife Victoria assignment at 9 am. I almost didn’t make it cause I overslept a bit. Then I had studio photography, where we photographed glass. It was so much fun and the photos turned out AMAZING. I’ll post them here tomorrow I think. After that we got a new brief. I sorta thought we wouldn’t get it until Friday, but we didn’t. I was hoping to relax the next days without constantly worrying about some assignment I have to do.
The new assignment was kinda shocking. We are going to animate an intro to a movie. You know the part where you see the cast list and the name of the movie, directors etc. I never ever thought we would get an assignment like this because animation is not really for graphic designers. At least that’s what I thought. Now I have to learn After Effects or Flash properly to make it look good and I have to work with story boards. It’s gonna be challenging! The funny thing about the assignment is that to do research we have to watch tons of movies. The teachers actually suggested that we made some popcorn and watched them. Funny! We have to choose between Baraka (1992), Nosferatu (1922), Blue Velvet (1986), Blade Runner (1982) or Trainspotting (1996). I think I might have seen two of them, but it’s such a long time ago. My plan is to watch them all before I make up my mind on which one to go for.
Sooo I managed to take some photos for you guys before I handed in my assignment for Wildlife Victoria. For once I actually finished a whole day before it was due. Good job, Vibeke!:D I’m super pleased with the outcome. Now we just have to wait for the client to decide which one they wanna use. I really really hope they like mine!

The A2 board I handed in with all the stationary mounted on. Not quite happy with the way I attached them to the white board, but that’s not so important (I hope). It looks okay.

The backside of the business card.

Contact details on the top of letterheads and compliment slips.
The brochure:

And finally the style sheet with the logo, fonts I’ve used and colors. Not the best photo, but you get the idea:) It’s mounted on the other side of the A2 board.

So it’s been one year and three months since I operated for thyroid cancer. Time flies by so quickly. Can’t believe it, feels like yesterday. I remember all the feelings, thought and fears like it was yesterday. My doctor back in Norway was not too happy with me leaving for Australia, while still in the process of getting better and stabilizing the thyroxine level.
I knew that at some point I had to get in contact with doctors down here to continue the check-ups. After asking around, I made an appointment with a GP and he referred me to Alfred hospital. Where I got a consultation about 1-2 months ago. I had a blood test done and an ultra sound, which came back with super positive results! No odd looking lymph glands and perfect blood work (for a person who’s had thyroid cancer). So I’m really happy. I was a little bit nervous about the results, there’s no way I wanna go through that nightmare from last year again.
The doctor, who’s really nice btw, wants to do one last test though. Just to make sure there’s no cancer cells left. I have to sorta do a mild version of the radioactive iodine treatment I did a year ago. They won’t give me as much as they did back then, just a small dose and I don’t have to stay isolated. Then two days later they’ll do a body scan of me and if some parts takes up the iodine it means I still got cancer cells. The biggest problem with this treatment is that I cannot have any thyroxine in my body. Therefore I need to stop taking my thyroxine pill two weeks before the treatment. By not taking the pill I’ll get tired and exhausted. With all the school work we got at the end of the semester I don’t see that I can do this right now. Of course I can do it when we have our winter break. I think I’m just really nervous about that feeling of being off the thyroxine for two weeks, cause I haven’t experienced it yet. I know this is a test I should absolutely go through with, wether it’s here in Australia or when I go back to Norway. I’m just gonna need to decide what to do/ when to do it.
Decisions decisions.. Oh well! I’m glad everything looks good so far:)

Random photo from the other day.
I’m so close to the finish line and it feels so good. The Wildlife Victoria assignment is due early on Tuesday. I only need to print the final versions on the right stocks and I can breath again. For once I’m satisfied with what I’ve made. I really wanna win that iPad! Or at least get a good grade. Here’s all the test prints I’ve done so far. I’ll show you everything more closely when it’s done. What do you think?

After some really lazy days this Easter I’m finally back in school mode, even though we’re not starting again until Friday. I just got so much to do. As I’ve told you before we’ve got a new logo design assignment, for a real client – Wildlife Victoria. My idea is to use the road signs as inspiration. I’ve sorta modernized the sign. Changed the kangaroo, the colors and made it white instead of black. I’ve also used a gradient in the logo instead of a solid color. My concept is not a 100% solid yet, as I should have played more on the road sign idea. Right now it’s just the idea for the pictogram in the logo, while I should go a little bit further with it.
I was thinking that I’m gonna use the shape of the sign, as a pattern/imagery, in my stationary and on the brochure we have to make. The brochure as to be finished on Friday, so I got a lot of work ahead of me. I get tired thinking about it. But I have an idea for it, I think. I’ve made two versions of the logo, one to use on the business card (maybe on the brochure as well) and one for other stationary.

Test print of the business card. Not the best photo – poor lighting. The colors are a little bit different in real life. I also have to use a different stock for when I hand it in, this one doesn’t do my assignment justice. I’m gonna visit Paper Point tomorrow and look for some stock I can use:)
Have you seen my new content page?
All my pages looks so crapy. The small images I made years ago are really bad. I don’t know what I was thinking back then. So the other day I decided to remake some of them and try to make them look a little bit better. Still got lots of pages to redo, hopefully I’ll get to them soon. Also some of my tutorials are outdated and the graphics I made years ago is crap. I just don’t have the heart do delete anything. It’s sort of a little memory from when I first started.
Here’s a bigger version of the icons I’ve made for my content page. Like?

I hope you’ve had a great Easter so far.
We starter our vacation on Thursday and so far I haven’t done anything but relax. Love it! I should start doing some school work soon though, got a lot to catch up, because I was sick some days last week. All yesterday (except for the beach in the morning) and today we’ve been playing Mario Kart on Wii. I am totally hooked! Soon we’ve played all the cups you can play in the game. Stupid really to get hooked on something like that, then you won’t do anything else but play. Oh well. It’s vacation isn’t it?
We also saw the movie Hodejegerne (English: Headhunters) today. I haven’t read the book so I didn’t know how the movie would be like at all. But I must say that it’s one of the better movies I’ve seen lately. I absolutely loved it. They’re actually going to make a U.S. remake of this movie. Not sure when that happens though.
Have you seen Hodejegerne?
